Peptones are the most widely used source of organic nitrogen for the formulation of microbiological media, whether for detection, quantification, or biotechnological applications. Among the wide range of peptones available, today we want to talk about Proteose Peptone No. 3.
This hydrolysate is defined as an enzymatic digest of proteins from various animal sources.
Peptones in general began to gain popularity at the end of the 19th century, but it was during World War I when the first Proteose Peptone No. 3 was developed. Its development focused on finding an ingredient that would generate high toxin production in cultures of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, thereby synthesizing the vaccine against diphtheria.
Vaccines and diagnostics

It is currently widely used to produce multivalent bacterial and veterinary vaccines. - MRS Broth, with applications such as culturing and enumeration of Lactobacillus or for the manufacture of probiotics.
- Granada Agar Base, a selective and differential medium for detecting Streptococcus agalactiae in clinical samples.
High concentration of peptides and amino acids
Its wide array of ingredients means that it is not necessary to mix it with other peptones, although it creates a synergistic effect with yeast extract. Within the peptide profile, the values of glutamic acid, proline, and leucine stand out.
